Article #14 - What does DVD Rental Powered by LoveFilm mean?
LOVEFiLM has grown through a number of mergers and acquisitions of other competing DVD rental companies - the three biggest ones being Online Rentals (the original company), ScreenSelect and Video Island. The latest claims are over 900,000 members, over 65,000 titles, and over 3 million rentals per month across five countries.
When reviewing the various DVD Rental companies you may see the words "Powered By LoveFilm" somewhere on the companies website or terms and conditions. What does this mean? Well, it means that LoveFilm of providing a white label service to other brands such as Tesco DVD Rental for example. Each of the "powered by" DVD Rental services will typically have plans similar to that of LOVEFiLM's, but will vary in someway in order to differentiate themselves. This difference may be a subset of the service, varying prices, different length of free trial periods, etc. We do not know if customers of the various DVD Rental service providers are treated differently when it comes to choosing titles to be sent and the speed of turnaround etc.

- Sofa Cinema - the Guardian newspaper sponsors this one.
- WHSmith Movies Direct - from the WH Smith bookstore chain.
- Tesco DVD Rental - Service for the Tesco supermarket chain website.
- EasyCinema.com - Service in conjunction with the Easy Group.
- Odeon Direct - Service in conjunction with the Odeon cinema chain.
